Yes, that’s right, you read correctly. We just wrapped up a week of Summer Camp. As you all there in the Northern Hemisphere are finally beginning to feel some of the mild affects of Winter, we have been experiencing a very comfortable summer here in São Paulo. A local pastor who has become a friend and encouragement over the past few months asked if Emily and I would be willing to come and participate in the Teen Week Summer Camp. The theme of the camp is always “Exército de Cristo,” or “Army of Christ.” It’s a week of camp with a rigid yet enjoyable military theme. The young people learn lessons of personal discipline and teamwork, as well as receive good Bible teaching.
Aside from caring for Chloe during the week, Emily had responsibilities in the kitchen, including decorating the meal-house for every meal. She also kept involved with the girl campers to the extent that she could. Brandon was one of the counselors for the Boy’s Cabin and had the opportunity to lead a couple of the morning devotionals with the guys.
During the week several kids made professions of faith, and an emphasis on sanctification seemed to bear fruit in the lives of several others as well. We are very thankful to have had this opportunity to serve.
The highlight of the week for many of the kids is “The Oscars.” Some of the staff put together a list of awards, ranging from the silly (such as, “best hair”) to serious (“sportsmanship award”) Hopefully we will have pictures of the awards to show you. In the meanwhile we will spoil the surprise by telling you all that Chloe won the “Mascot” award! Though I’m sure she was moved with gratitude, she seemed content to simply bask in the attention. In all seriousness, though, she made a good mascot and everyone loved her.
Hopefully we will have more pictures soon, but here are a few to whet your whistle:
